Cayman Islands at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games

The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee (CIOC) is thrilled to be sending a team of 5 athletes to participate in the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Nanjing, China from August 16th – 28th. The Cayman Islands will be represented across the sports of Athletics, Gymnastics, Equestrian and Sailing.

Pearl Morgan will be competing in the 200m at the track, Morgan Lloyd in Artistic Gymnastics, Polly Serpell in the Individual Jumping Event and Florence Allan and Pablo Bertan both in the One Person Dingy Sailing Event. Caymanian track star Jamal Walton recently suffered a strained hamstring at the World Junior Championships, and although he is expected to fully recover before the 2015 season, it will not allow him to compete or travel with the YOG team as once hoped. Lauren Hew, who has just returned from a successful competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, has qualified for the YOG with a ‘B’ Standard but with very limited numbers accepted to participate in each event, she was unfortunately not selected by the International Swimming Assocation (FINA) to compete.

The first summer version of the YOG was held in Singapore in 2010 where Cayman sent a team of 4 in Athletics, Sailing and Swimming.  The age limitation of the athletes is 14 to 18, and varies specifically for each sport. The costs of hosting the event will be shared by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the host city, while the travel costs of athletes and coaches are paid by the IOC.

The YOG are unique as they incorporate a Cultural and Education Programme, featuring variety of activities geared towards bringing the youth of the world together through a multi-sport competition. The YOG include educational experiences based on the Olympic values that promote healthy lifestyles and allow young athletes to become well-rounded individuals with "true sporting spirits." The programme combines Olympic traditions (such as the torch relay) with diverse cultures to spread the Olympic spirit.

The majority of the team has begun their two day journey today, August 11th, and will arrive in Nanjing on the 13th of August, with competition beginning on the 18th for the Cayman Islands Delegation.  The rest of the team departs Grand Cayman tomorrow. The Opening Ceremony for the Games will take place on August 16th with the Closing Ceremony planned for the 28th.
